About Benshi
Benshi is a film discovery tool that helps you find movies you haven't seen yet — on theme with what you already love.
What it does
Give Benshi a Letterboxd list URL or a few favorite films as seeds. It reads the vibe — mood, era, genre, setting — and recommends titles that belong on the same shelf. You can filter out films you've already seen (by linking your Letterboxd username), export picks to CSV for Letterboxd, and explore by "describe a vibe" when you're in the mood for something specific.
How it works
Benshi uses data from TMDb (The Movie Database) for metadata and recommendations. When you paste a Letterboxd list, it fetches the list's films and uses them to infer intent and find similar titles. Optional IMDb and Metascore ratings are shown when available. Benshi is not an official Letterboxd product; it uses your public Letterboxd profile and lists to improve recommendations.
For film lovers
The name Benshi refers to the live narrators who accompanied silent films in Japan — your personal guide to what's next on your watchlist. We built Benshi to feel like that: a thoughtful companion for discovery, not another algorithm feed.
