Benshi

Privacy Policy

Overview

Benshi ("we," "our") is a film recommendation tool. This policy describes what data we use when you visit benshi.app and how we handle it.

Data we use

  • Letterboxd username: If you link your Letterboxd account, we use your public username to fetch your public films and watchlist so we can filter out titles you've already seen. This is stored in your browser (localStorage) and is not sent to our servers for long-term storage.
  • List URLs and seed titles: When you paste a Letterboxd list URL or search for films, that input is sent to our servers to generate recommendations. We do not retain these after the request is complete.
  • General usage: Our hosting provider may log standard technical data (e.g. IP address, request timestamps) for security and operation. We do not sell or share this with third parties for advertising.

Third-party services

We use TMDb for movie data, and optionally IMDb/Metacritic for ratings. Letterboxd data is read from public pages. Each service has its own privacy policy; we encourage you to review them.

Cookies and storage

We use browser localStorage to remember your Letterboxd username and preferences so you don't have to re-enter them. We do not use tracking cookies or third-party advertising.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the latest version. Continued use of Benshi after changes constitutes acceptance.
